My dear grandmother (moms stepmom) fell and broke her hip yesterday. She has since had surgery and is in recovery doing remarkably well for a 70something year old. She should be in the hospital another couple days but she is looking well.
What’s crazy is that we just saw her. Spent a week with her over Thanksgiving. Loved on her. Played with her. And today she is waking up in a hospital bed with my grandpa by her side. They are both believers which is great, but I got to thinking this morning. And we are spiritually just as broken and shattered as her hip physically is. We are clumsy and our sin constantly berates us until we are fallen and broken until we are weary and hurt. We are but dust and feeble relying only on the strength and grace of God.
I absolutely live this verse: and do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear Him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs on your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. Matthew 10: 28-31
And her injury also makes me think of this verse: but our citizenship is in heaven and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables Him even to subject all things to himself. Philippians 3: 20-21
He knew what He was going to do with grandma before she even fell, and He knows what He’s going to do with her through this at this very second. But even through her physical pain she has a promise. That He knows her intimately and perfectly. She means more to Him than just a bird. And He will one day, maybe next week or maybe not till years after her death, present her with a new and glorified body in Him. For Scripture says: and I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1: 6
