Just in case you have never heard of the band Avett Brothers let me enlighten you… because otherwise I dont know that we could be friends.
Here is a little about them: The Avett Brothers (pronounced /ˈeɪvɨt/) is a folk rock band from Concord, North Carolina. The band is made up of two brothers, Scott Avett and Seth Avett, who play the banjo and guitar respectively, and Bob Crawford who plays the stand-up bass. They are often joined on tour by cellist Joe Kwon. Following on from Seth and Scott’s former rock band Nemo, the Avett Brothers combine bluegrass, country, punk, pop melodies, folk, rock and roll, honky tonk, and ragtime to produce a sound described by the San Francisco Chronicle as having the “heavy sadness of Townes Van Zandt, the light pop concision of Buddy Holly, the tuneful jangle of the Beatles, the raw energy of the Ramones.”[yes, I did in fact copy that from Wikipedia. ]
Anyways… they have a very unique sound. I happened to stumble upon them in a very funny way. In Africa 2008 my roommate Emily (who is now married to the boy she met on that trip, but thats another story for another post) kept talking about this band called Avett Brothers and how they had a song with my name in it. Gabriela, not Bella. Unfortunately everyone knew my real name since all our tickets and such were under our legal names. Anyway it was this song called “Pretty Girl from Chile” and she kept nagging me to listen to it and tell her what I thought. I pretty much just listened so she would leave me alone for a minute. FAIL. After that I kept asking her to borrow her Ipod so I could listen to their music. It’s actually pretty awesome what happened next. I listened while Em was in the shower, while she was talking with claybaby, while she was on the phone, while we were driving to sight and she was sleeping – catch my drift. NOW, 2 years later, when I listen to that CD I think of Kenya. I remember where we were driving when I was listening to that song. I remember Em and the awesome encouragement she was to me, the awesome friend she became, the serious conversations we had, I remember an incredibly awesome time in my life.
I only have 3 of their cd’s… HINT HINT, but I just bought myself the newest one last week. And I CANNOT. PUT. IT. DOWN. It’s like crack – and that is legit. Their lyrics are very relatable and fun. You feel the emotion that the song’s story is portraying. I absolutely feel like they wrote the songs just for me. Cheese central, I know. When I need a good cry I have found myself putting on their more sad songs and just singing and crying with the song. I don’t know whats wrong with me, and for that matter, why I’m even telling you that. They are strange and different but true to themselves, and I think that’s why I like them so much.
Here are a couple of my favorite songs (sorry, some of them are just going to be live from concert):
That should be enough to keep you occupied for a while.
