Today mom and I ran a 5k. It was my second and her first. It was for a good cause, big brother big sister, here in the area. The day was magnificent. And a perfect temperature. We were both surprisingly nervous before the race started but the nerves only lasted until I crossed the starting line. Mom and I hung together about 5 minutes and then we separated. About 10 minutes in I turned to look for mom and landed wrong… the result? Rolled my good ankle. Instantly I thought there goes my time. I considered stopping to wait for mom because both ankles were really tight and killing me but I knew I would be mad at myself if I did not keep going. I stopped about 10 seconds to stretch then started running again. Thankfully, it stretched itself back out pretty easily so it was easier to keep going.
I talked to myself a little too much and started second guessing myself and slowing down. Thankfully some pretty awesome songs came through my playlist and I was able to get some good distance without focusing on things to much.
As I turned onto the last .2 miles I got a second wind and ran like the wind across the finishing line. I doubled back a bit and waited for mom so i could cheer her on, and she ran across the finish line also. I was 6.06 minutes shorter than my 5K in may, coming in at 38.38 and mom finished her first race at around 48 minutes. Not too shabby for someone who hadn’t been in the gym that long.
So we are now laying around the house watching Tron and Tron: Legacy, and relaxing so we are not completely useless tomorrow.
What’s next? October 1st 5K and December 3rd jingle bell run 5K. Happy running to all doing the race in October.
